June Precip Variability

01 Jul 2016 05:37 AM
The featured map displays NOAA MRMS Q3 precipitation estimates for June 2016 for the Ames and Des Moines area. The locals here in Ames have lamented missing out on rainfall events and a storm again on Thursday only brushed the northeastern side of town. Totals for the month are much higher just south and especially southeast of town. But totals are even lower to the northwest over toward Boone. Thus there is plenty of variability over the area with how the crops are doing.

29 Jun 2016 05:37 AM
Sunny days have been the norm this June with warm daytime temperatures resulting as well. The featured chart presents a time series of cloud deck and coverage observations from the Des Moines weather station. The light blue area is an attempt to represent clear skies and there is plenty of it in the plot.

20 straight in June

28 Jun 2016 05:35 AM
For Des Moines, yesterday was the 20th straight day with a high temperature above average. The featured chart displays the streaks of days above (positive values) or below (negative values) through yesterday for primary climate sites tracked by the NWS. A few places to our south and west have streaks even longer than 20 days. Many of these above average streaks will end with cooler and drier air settling into the Midwest this week.

June Precip Totals

17 Jun 2016 04:32 AM
Heavy rainfall events have been more common in June for Iowa, but not all parts of the state have participated. The featured map displays month to date totals as estimated by NOAA's MRMS project. Much of northeastern Iowa is analyzed in the five to ten inch range with totals below two inches for most of the state. Southeastern Iowa is the portion of the state that really needs rain and is currently highlighted in the US Drought Monitor for dryness. The near term forecast is not optimistic for more heavy rainfall in the state for the next seven days.
