Late for Two Days of 90+

29 Sep 2023 05:30 AM
It appears summer wants to return to the state with forecast high temperatures expected in the upper 80s and even some lower 90s over the state over these next three days. It is certainly quite late in the season for such high temperatures and the featured chart presents the frequency of having two consecutive days of a high temperature of at least 90 degrees for Des Moines. The side table lists the end date of the earliest and latest in the season events. The 5th and 6th of October 1963 is shown to be the latest such event. While not shown, the latest three day stretch record for the site ended on 1 October 1897.

Six Days of 90+

19 Jul 2022 05:30 AM
The climatologically warmest week of the year looks not to disappoint this week with Des Moines reaching 91 on Monday and forecast to hit 90 plus through Saturday. The featured chart presents the frequency of a given day of the year having the next five days (inclusive six days) with a high temperature of at least 90 degrees. Sure enough, the peak frequency is about this time of year. Typically these streaks are hard to maintain as summer time thunderstorm activity tends to knock down temperatures for one of the days with cloud cover or actual rainfall, so it remains to be seen if we can make it through Saturday as there are chances of rain in the forecast for this period.

First 90 and days over

06 Jun 2016 05:08 AM
The current forecast has a chance of Ames reaching 90+ degrees for the first time this year later in the week. The featured chart displays the combination of days per year at or above 90 degrees and the first such date. The red line denotes the accumulated frequency and for the first week of June, we are roughly at 50%, which means that about half of the previous years have seen a 90+ degree temperature by this date. There have been some years that Ames even failed to reach this level.

Interesting 90s Pattern

09 May 2016 05:33 AM
Temperatures soared well into the 80s and even some 90s over the Midwestern US this past Friday. This was the first of the really warm and summer-like temperatures this year. The featured map displays the average first date of 90+ degrees and the locations estimates to have reached this level so far this year. What is interesting is the locations that got to 90+ on Friday! The warmest areas were in northern Minnesota and North Dakota! From this analysis, much of Kansas remains yet to experience 90 degrees this year which is much later than normal to date.

90s on-time

15 Jun 2015 05:44 AM
The featured map displays the combination of average first date per year of 90+ degree high temperatures and the locations that have seen such a temperature so far this year. Please note that the locations plotted with an "X" are thinned for readability. In general, this year lines up nicely with climatology as evaluated for mid June. Only portions of the eastern corn belt are shown as behind. The forecast for this week looks stormy with highs only reaching the low 80s.

Waiting for 90

27 May 2015 05:43 AM
Very warm temperatures have been difficult to come by so far this season. Places like Des Moines have yet to see a 90 degree temperature. The featured chart looks at the date of first 90+ degree temperature of the year and the number of days that year at or above 90. The red line shows the cumulative frequency of first date and the mid point of the line (average first date) is still a week away, so not hitting 90 yet is not abnormal.

90 Degree Departures

08 Oct 2014 05:44 AM
The chances of Iowa reaching 90 degrees again this year are very slim, so the departures plotted on the map are likely final for much of the Midwest. The map compares the total number of days at or above 90 degrees this year with the average total from previous years. The really warm weather has been difficult to come by with most of Iowa analyzed in the 10-20 day range meaning we experienced 10 to 20 fewer days this year at or above 90 degrees.

Last and Days over 90

28 Aug 2014 05:43 AM
After finally getting a period of hot and muggy weather typical for summer in Iowa, our weather has reverted back to pleasant afternoon temperatures. Could we see another day above 90 this year? The featured chart looks at the combination of days above 90 degrees and the last day of the year that had a 90+ degree temperature for Des Moines. The red line represents the accumulated frequency. For example, 40% of the years have had their final 90 degree temperature by 1 September. It will be interesting to see how 2014 finishes on this chart as the total number of days so far has been paltry.

First 90 of the year

07 May 2014 05:36 AM
Hitting 90 degrees for the first time this year appears possible for parts of Iowa on Wednesday. The featured map presents the average first date of 90+ degrees with those locations already over 90 this year denoted by an x. Iowa is shown ranging from mid May over western Iowa to early June over eastern Iowa. So hitting 90 today would be a bit early, but we will certainly take it after a long and cold winter season. Note that years whereby 90 degrees was not hit were not included in the analysis.

First 90

14 May 2013 05:39 AM
The warmest weather so far this year is expected today with high temperatures pushing 90 degrees over most of the state. The featured map displays an analysis of the average date of the first 90 degree temperature of the year. The general gradient is from west to east with extreme western Iowa seeing its first 90 degree temperature around this time of year and far northeastern Iowa around the end of June. It will also be windy today, which will help dry out fields in the state allowing further progress on planting.

Still time for more 90s

28 Aug 2012 05:33 AM
Warm and rather muggy weather has returned to Iowa with highs around 90 degrees. The forecast calls for more of this weather for this week to end August. Will the end of August bring the end of 90 degree weather for Des Moines? The featured chart presents the last day each year whereby the high temperature was at or above 90. The black line represents the average last date, which is still in our future this year! The bottom chart is a simple comparison between the last 90 degree date and the average temperature for that year. The really warm years do not necessarily have a late last 90 degree day. With this year set to smash the average temperature record, we will not necessarily see 90 degree weather into October.

50 days over 90

24 Aug 2012 12:02 AM
Thursday was yet another warm day for Iowa and Des Moines had its 50th day with a high temperature at or above 90 degrees. This makes for the largest total of days since 1988 as shown by the featured image. Only five other years than 2012 have had 50+ days over 90 degrees and we still have just over four months to go this year! The bottom chart presents the number of days each year above 90 for days after 23 August. We would need another 10 days to catch 1983 and then a bunch more to catch 1934 and 1936. The forecast has a high very close to 90 on Friday and then more close to 90 weather next week, so we are saying that we have a chance...

Streaks of 90+

19 Jul 2011 05:53 AM
Yesterday was another very hot day in Iowa with high temperatures nearing 100 degrees. It was the fourth day in a row with a high temperature over 90 for Ames. The featured chart presents the yearly maximum daily streak over 90 degrees for high temperature for Ames. Some years, like 2004, the temperature never got that warm for the entire year! Our current streak has a chance of being the longest we have seen in around 20 years.

Early for 90

11 Apr 2011 05:51 AM
Thanks for a strong low pressure center to our north pulling warm and humid air into the state on Sunday, temperatures climbed well into the 80s and even topped out at 90 in Des Moines. The featured chart presents the first day of each year that the temperature hit 90 or above. This year tied for second earliest behind 1986. The average first day is not until the first week of June! The bar colors represent if the year was earlier (red) or later (blue) than average. Temperatures today will struggle to reach 60 with cooler weather expected for the rest of the week.
