At Or Above 70 Record

09 Oct 2023 05:30 AM
On Friday, Des Moines failed to reach a high temperature of at least 70 degrees. This snapped the streak of 139 straight days with a daily high temperature of at least 70 degrees. The featured chart presents the yearly maximum streak of days along with the top twenty longest streaks. It is certainly interesting to see so many of the recent years show in the top twenty and is likely indicative of the increasing heat island effect as well as increasing temperatures from climate change. While temperatures will start off the week nice for this time of year, it appears 70s will be just out of reach.

First 70

09 Apr 2014 05:39 AM
Today is the long anticipated day of very warm weather with highs expected into the 70s for much of the state. The featured map presents an analysis of the average first date of 70+ degrees each year and those locations that have already hit that level this year denoted with a x. The eastern half of the map is where the persistent cold and heavy snowfall has occurred this year and you can see how far behind they are with hitting their first 70, by about two weeks. Hitting 70 today would be about normal for areas in the teal color. Minneapolis would be one such area.

Repeating 70

31 Mar 2014 05:39 AM
Strong winds helped boost temperatures to wonderfully warm levels on Sunday with Des Moines topping out over 70 degrees. The featured chart presents the frequency of having a second 70+ degree day afterwards. For the end of March, the frequencies are below 50%. The higher frequencies shown earlier in March are simply due to a limited number of events. Of course, the highest values are in July when each day is almost guaranteed to be at least 70 degrees.

Staying power of 70

01 Nov 2011 05:49 AM
High temperatures today are expected to soar into the low 70s for much of Iowa. The calendar does now say November, so one may expected the staying power of such warm temperatures to be fleeting. The featured chart presents the frequency of having a day above 70 followed by another day over 70 by each day of the year. As shown by the chart, the chances for early November are not good. Indeed, temperatures will fall back into the 40s tomorrow as the warm up will be brief!
