Unique Alert Counts

Posted: 10 May 2016 05:35 AM

Severe weather was abundant on Monday with damaging storms reported from Iowa to Texas. The NWS Des Moines issued a number of Tornado and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings along with a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. The featured top chart looks at the unique number of VTEC coded alerts that the office issues each year. The bottom chart explicitly lists out the unique codes used each year. Warning procedures have changed over the years, so some warning types are no longer used. This chart only covers those products that have Valid Time Extent Coding (which is most of the alert types), so the actual number of alert types is higher than shown.
